Wisdom from the Spirit

There come times in our life when we don’t know what to do. Where we can’t seem to decide on what choice to make and don’t really know where to find the answer. Society will tell you to look deep within yourself to find the answer. I, however, tell you to look for the answer within God. He wants what’s best for you and knows the answer to all of your questions. All you need to do is ask for wisdom.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” – James 3:17

Most people believe that wisdom can only be achieved through experience, knowledge, understanding, and insight. However, I’ve come to find that true wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit whom Jesus called the Helper. Maybe some of you don’t know too much about the Holy Spirit. Well, I want to tell you a little about Him today and I encourage you to read about Him in the Bible itself.  Now, the Holy Spirit was sent to us for several reasons.

1) He provides us with the wisdom to understand His word and He will remind us of it in our time of need.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” – John 14:26

2) He dwells in us so that we can be closer to God and never be alone.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” – John 14:16

3) He guides us to the truth.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you to all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” – John 16: 13-14

4) We receive spiritual fruits from the Holy Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” – Galatians 5:22-25

These are just some of the few things that the Holy Spirit does for us. Before I actually started really looking for God, I didn’t really understand the role the Holy Spirit played in my life. I knew He was a part of the Trinity, but I did not fully understand what He could do for me. Now, I see His work in my life every day.

One of the things I know most people struggle with is reading the Bible. Some don’t read it because they are busy. Others because they don’t find it interesting. In my case, I would read bits and pieces of it, but I never really understood what I was reading. To me, it was like trying to read a book about advanced physics. I was reading the Bible for the sake of saying that I read it. However, I got nothing from just reading the words.

When I truly started looking for God and started reading His word again, I asked God to give me wisdom and understanding so that I may be able to get to know Him better. This time, the Holy Spirit interpreted God’s word for me and I finally started to understand. God gives understanding and wisdom to those who truly seek it. That is why when we half-heartedly seek Him, His word makes no sense to us.

“But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

So, if you ever feel like you are lacking wisdom or like you don’t understand something, ask God to give you the wisdom you seek. Instead of looking for answers in this world, look for them in Him. God knows all. In the Bible, it says that even the foolishness of God is greater than that of men. If even the foolishness of God is greater than that of men, then can you imagine how wise God really is? It is humbling to know that everything we see and everything we have was given to us by God. Therefore, seek wisdom from the one who created all things and He will give it to you.

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” – 1 John 5:14-15
