Walking in Humility
By Leon
Humility is defined as a modest or low view of one’s own importance; humbleness. The Bible tells us God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. It often speaks about how God blesses those who walk in humility. From personal experience, I find it easy to forget just how important humility is.
With that said, humility is not thinking less of yourself. Humility is recognizing that you need God’s help in all that you do. To be humble is not to bow before others, it’s to love them and treat them with the same kindness God has shown you.
Humility is being slow to anger. How many times have we fallen victim to anger in traffic? Or perhaps someone cutting in line at the supermarket? Maybe someone at work who is loud or disrespectful to you. You don’t have to bow before them, but you don’t have to let anger take hold of you either. You don’t know what they might be going through. When we’re only concerned with how we might feel, it’s easy to fall victim to frustration and anger. However, if you’re thinking of yourself less, then chances are you will not find yourself angry in certain situations.
Humility is also recognizing that without God you can do nothing. We may have talents that help us achieve certain things in life, but acknowledging that God has given you those talents adds blessings. We need to continually recognize it is because of His grace we are where we are today. If we keep that in mind, we are far more likely to have a sense of humility.
There are a few things I would like you to consider as you start your day.
- Am I expressing humility in my speech?
- Am I expressing humility at work?
- Am I expressing humility to my family?
- Am I expressing humility to those I meet?
- Am I humble before the God who gave me life?
Meekness is often hand in hand with humility. “The meek shall inherit the earth.” Being meek is to be submissive. God does not always want you to be submissive to people, but rather to Him. Those who surrender to His truth will inherit the earth. Will you take some time to consider in prayer what was written here today about humility? If He reveals something in your life that could be improved, will you be meek and surrender?
