Thoughts Are Contagious

by Leon

A few days ago, I was listening to a song about how thoughts are contagious. The particular song isn’t Christian nor intended for a spiritual audience. However, I couldn’t help but recall how certain thoughts often passed onto me from others. More than just people passing their thoughts onto me: television, music, social media and literature did the same.

We live in the information age. We are constantly being fed information, whether they be ideas and opinions or direct images. Nearly everywhere we turn our mind is being assaulted by various thoughts. With this thought in my mind from the song, I remembered a specific passage in the Bible.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5

The world and society we live in are not exactly godly. In fact – it’s the opposite, our generation often advocates for principles that go directly against the Bible. And if you defy this narrative you’re often ridiculed and made to feel like you’re a religious freak. Divorce? That’s OK if you’re unhappy. Drugs? Sure, so long as it’s in moderation. Waiting till marriage to have a sexual relationship? That’s absurd! The Bible actually foretold that society would become this way the more it distanced itself from God.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” – Isaiah 5:20

Thoughts are constantly coming into our minds and trying to nest. The more “thought” I put into it, the more I realized thoughts are the most contagious substance there is. So – the question comes knocking at our doors. What thoughts are we taking in? We cannot escape hearing and seeing things that go against the Bible. We live in a flawed, broken world. Still, we can guard our minds against such thoughts taking root. As Paul said in the above verse, we destroy every lofty argument and opinion against the knowledge of God. We take our thoughts captive to obey Christ.

When certain people try to tell you their opinions and views, ask yourself if what they are sharing lines up with the word of God in your heart. If television or music is telling you X be careful that you don’t start taking on those thoughts.

Thoughts are contagious, and they can take root if we allow them. Surround yourself with the right people, listen to the right music and watch shows that do not cross the line. Yes, we as Christians are different but that’s because this worldly system is not ours. Often times what the world tells our minds through various thoughts is not OK.

I hope this post has given you something to think about!

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23-24
