The Touch of Christ
by Leon
As we carry on through this pandemic, distancing from others has become commonplace. This is especially true for those who are ill or who may demonstrate any of the symptoms of covid-19. In most cases, it may be wise to do so, depending on the circumstance and the individual.
One of my favorite stories in the New Testament is about a leper that finds himself healed by the touch of Christ. If you are unfamiliar with leprosy, it’s a contagious and terrible ailment of the skin. Those afflicted suffered from agonizing, blistering sours that mutilated and ravaged the body. The modern society of Jesus’ day banned lepers from cities and crowds. If any leper approached a crowd the people had the right to stone them.
Though this may be one of the shortest stories in the Bible, it has always been a favorite of mine. For the longest time, I saw it as an example of Jesus’ reaching out to cleanse us of our sins. While that may be true, its meaning has become a lot more relevant for us today.
“When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” – Matthew 8:1-3
Many of us can now relate to the “fear” behind being around those who are sick. And those who are not afraid can probably relate to watching others push away those who are. But here we get to witness the love of our Lord reach past fear and extend His love to someone who was hurting. You might think I’m trying to advocate against staying safe, but no. I will never tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do in situations like these. These situations are absolutely between each individual and God. I’m merely pointing out what a compassionate and merciful Lord we serve.
Though this is a story that is thousands of years old, it yet remains relevant today. We all can relate to the fear of being around those who are sick. I know that I have, even before this pandemic started because I have always been at high risk. But it’s awesome to see that we serve a God not gripped by fear. We serve a God that is willing to reach out and touch us to make us whole again regardless of our circumstances. Even when the crowd lets us down, even when everyone else might turn their backs on us: Jesus is always there patiently waiting to reach out and heal our hearts.
