Obedience and Blessings
by Leon
In Genesis chapter 12 the LORD comes to Abraham with specific instruction. He is told to leave the country he has always known, to a place the LORD said he would show him. God made a promise that if Abraham did so, he would be blessed in more ways than one. God promised that Abraham would become a great nation, and his name would be great. Everyone who blessed him, God would in return bless; those who cursed Abraham God would curse. And every family on earth would be blessed because of Abraham.
But can you imagine the leap of faith it took for Abraham to leave his country? Keep in mind this was a time without roads or hotels, even law. There were bandits, murderers, wild animals, disease, unclean water, no refrigeration and much more. Yet, Abraham obeyed.
Abraham obeyed and went on to become the father of the Kingdom of Israel. Today Abraham’s name is revered among all three of the major religions. Most Importantly every family on earth is blessed by this act of obedience, for it was through Abraham’s lineage Jesus Christ was born, killed and raised from the dead. In Jesus, we are granted freedom from both sin and death.
One act of obedience from Abraham led to so much blessing from our Creator. And so, on this Wednesday I want to remind you to check your obedience. God might not ask us to do something as dramatic as leaving a country, but He does ask us to obey Him through our daily lives. The map of obedience can be seen through the Bible that was written by the apostles, shown through Jesus’ deeds and words. Jesus told us there is no greater commandment than loving your brother as yourself and loving God with all your heart. So, I ask you during this week are you obeying these commands with the best of your ability?
How about spending time studying the Bible, meditating on the words that bring life? Or perhaps spending time in prayer seeking the LORD out? God has called us to prayer and study for growth in our relationship with Him. How about sharing the message of truth with others? That too is a call given to us believers. These acts may not seem as compelling as what Abraham had to do but obedience in God remains the same. Maybe obedience for you is simply sharing your light with your co-workers. Maybe it’s merely loving and being a friend to someone. Maybe it’s just seeking to grow in wisdom through prayer and study.
If we act in accordance with scripture, standing on obedience to the things which God calls us to do – you can expect blessings to follow. A simple act of Godly obedience daily can change your life in ways you never imagined, just as it did for Abraham.
So, I ask you as you begin your Wednesday – what obedience to God can you walk in throughout the day?
