God is Not Mysterious

God works in mysterious ways. This saying has been popping up more and more lately. I have talked about this in the past, but God has been putting this on my heart lately. There is so much in this world that we cannot explain. There are so many things we can’t help but question. However, it is not our job to know all the answers. That is God’s job. Our job is to trust in Him and have faith that God knows all.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

So, I guess the question is, why is it that we say that God works in mysterious ways? Well, the answer is simple. So many people use this saying because it’s easier than saying, “I don’t know”. We do not like the idea of not knowing something. If we do not know the answer to something, we feel like we lack wisdom or control. However, not knowing something is not a lack of wisdom.  I do not know how to fix a car but that does not mean I am dumb. It just means that I have no experience in that area. What we fail to remember is that God’s wisdom exceeds ours greatly. Besides, all wisdom comes from Him.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9

As for control. Again, what we fail to understand is that we only have so much control over our lives. There are so many factors that we cannot account for in life. Besides, as I’ve said before, it is our job to trust in God and surrender ourselves over to Him. We are to relinquish control over to Him. When we do that, we have the peace that only God can give because we know that He will take care of us. God knows all and sees all.

“And the Lord, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

God is not mysterious. Nor does he work in mysterious ways. We just don’t understand His work at times. However, He does have a plan and a purpose for everything He does. He reveals these things to us in His time. An example I can give to you is the time when my husband and I bought plantation shutters for our house. I have written about this before in my blog post “You’re Not Alone”, so I will only give a few highlights of that time here.

My husband and I had just bought a new home that did not have blinds on any of the windows. We decided to buy plantation shutters that we could install ourselves. I was left with the task to measure all the windows and send in the measurements. Needless to say, I measured them ALL wrong which caused all the shutters to not fit any of the windows. Around this time, my dad had left my mom for another woman. The reason this is important is that he was the only person I could think of who could help me fix my mistake. Anyways, I was told that customer service could replace 4 of the shutters at no cost, but that the rest would have to come out of pocket. This was going to cost my husband and me a couple of thousand dollars.

I was devastated and could not understand why this had to happen. Why couldn’t I be smarter and have measured the windows correctly the first time? Why did my dad have to abandon us precisely now? Why was I left to handle all this alone? What I didn’t realize at the time is that God had a reason for all of this. The next day, customer service called me back to tell me that after reviewing my case they were going to replace all my shutters at NO cost. This was only possible because of God. When my dad left, I was feeling abandoned and alone. However, God reminded me through this that He had not abandoned me and that I was never left alone.

“When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.” – Psalm 27:10

We may not understand why certain things happen to us in life. However, we can take courage and have peace in God because He is in control. We don’t always need to know the answer. We just need to have faith in Him. So, if you are struggling with something right now and don’t understand why, trust in the Lord your God. Let Him guide you and know that He won’t steer you wrong. In time, He may reveal to you why all of this had to happen through His wisdom. Trust in God.

“As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the works of God who makes everything.” – Ecclesiastes 11:5
